Introduction

The basic idea of what I am trying to do here is to put together a team of 4-6 guys to play daily fantasy college football for the fall of 2014. At least initially, all games will be played on Draft Kings. If we are successful, we may look at playing on other sites, but for now, the plan is just for Draft Kings.

Basic structure:
Draft Kings draws it's player pool from all players in the big 6 conferences (SEC, PAC12, ACC, AAC, Big10, Big 12) plus BYU, Army, Navy, and Notre Dame. So I'm thinking that each person will take on the responsibility for one conference. Depending on the workload of that conference, they may be asked to take on one of the four wild card schools. At least initially, no one will be assigned the Big Ten as their primary conference, but everyone is free to include Big Ten players in their weekly picks.

How Daily Fantasy Works
For those of you that have never played daily fantasy before, it is different from tradition fantasy. Each day will have a pool of games from which to choose players. The players will be assigned a salary based on a variety of things, but mostly based on how good they are. The object is to put together the highest scoring team possibly, filling all available positions, and staying under the set salary cap. On Draft Kings, the roster positions are: QB, QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, WR, TE, FLEX (RB/WR/or TE) and the salary cap is $50,000. Salaries will be released early in the week for the upcoming weekend of games.

Scoring System
The Draft Kings scoring system is as follows. Please keep this in mind when you make your weekly picks:
  • Passing TD = +4PTs
  • 25 Passing Yards = +1PT (+0.04PT/ per yard is awarded)
  • 300+ Yard Passing Game = +3PTs
  • Interception = -1PT
  • 10 Rushing Yards = +1PT (+0.1PT per yard is awarded)
  • Rushing TD = +6PTs
  • 100+ Yard Rushing Game = +3PTs
  • 10 Receiving Yards = +1PT (+0.1PT per yard is awarded)
  • Reception = +1PT
  • Receiving TD = +6PTs
  • 100+ Yard Receiving Game = +3PTs
  • Punt/Kickoff Return for TD = +6PTs
  • Fumble Lost = -1PT

Weekly Picks
Each week, each team member will be responsible for researching the match ups for each of the teams in their respective conference. They are then to write up a short summary of their favorite plays for the week, factoring how many points the player is likely to score, how much the player costs, and how unlikely the player is to post a dud. Please try to pair this down to 2-3 players per position.

Roster Selection
After the write-ups are submitted, I will review the picks and put together rosters that fit under the salary cap. Depending on how many good options there are in a given week, I may enter multiple lineups. I will ask for input on a case by case basis when assembling lineups. When the lineups are completed, I will post them on here.

Results
At the conclusion of each week, I will post the results of our games for the week, likely with reflections on what went right and what went wrong. The results can be used to learn from mistakes and improve as the season wears on.

Costs
I will take care of all initial costs associated with the team.

Profits
I cannot promise that the team will be a success, but if we are, I will split 70% of the profits evenly among all team members at the end of the season.

Tips for success

  1. Upon learning which league you have been assigned, totally immerse yourself into learning the players in the league. Know all of the starters and key backups at the positions used. Try to get an idea of how the team plays offense. All of the things you would do in traditional fantasy football for the whole league, except you only have to worry about a dozen or so teams.
  2. Read up on upcoming match ups. Know what kind of defense the team is going against and how likely they are to put up points?
  3. Look at the Vegas lines and over/unders. Generally speaking, you want to target players on teams that are likely to win, and you almost always want to target games that are to be high scoring. Vegas lines can be found here.
  4. Be aware of blowouts as starters will often get pulled early in them. This can lead to opportunities for backups to put up big points. Backups are risky, but can provide great value.
